Oprah: Welcome back, today we have Nathaniel Hawthorne, whose book, The Scarlet Letter has become a national best-seller and is also a favorite book of mine and has been featured as a must read on my book club. So Nathaniel, we were just discussing the title and what it signified, can u tell us about that?
Hawthorne: Well Oprah, the "Scarlet Letter" represents the act of adultery which is one of the major themes. And how the Scarlet "A" represented the sins our characters commited.
Oprah: But adultery is not the only theme right, there is al-
Hawthorne: no, the book also touches upon the sin, and morality, and the difficulties of tryin gto dothe right things. But theres also the flaws hester sees within the rules of her village.
Oprah: Now speaking of Hester, now you know me Nathaniel, i love me a strong woman. And that Hester is one bold and courageous woman. She stood by her man, even though it was wrong. She followed her heart no matter how much trouble it got her into. I actually have a quote I would like to share, " But this had been a sin of passion, not of principle, nor even purpose. "
Hawthorne: Yes, she was the kind of person who was rebellious in a way, following her heart instead of the rules placed upon her. She was a very strong hearted woman yes, and I wanted to show that.
Oprah: And also how she fought for her baby, she's one tough momma. Now, I found the novel vto be very intense and somewhat dark. You wrote about each character, focusing upon they're thoughts and feelings. You really wrote abt it in great detail and I must say it was very morbid. I'd like to read short quote, "Ah, but let her cover the mark as she will, the pang of it will be always in her heart."
Hawthorne: Well, i wanted to shine a light on each character's emotion throughout every event in their lives. Especially on Hester's distress, about her public humiliation, her now tainted reputation within her village, her daughter's well-being, just all her emotions after the monumental events that was happening. And also Dimmesdale, and all the emotional and mental stress that was put upon him by the village, Chillingworth, and also Hester. And his need to protect and care for her and Pearl. And how his distraught brought upon him so much pain and killed him in the end.
Oprah: Yes, well very intense, indeed. Well, I wanted to thank Nathaniel Hawthorne for joining us today, and now all of you will get to read his wonderful novel, because all of you in our audince will get a copy of The Scarlet Letter. I would again like to thank Nathaniel Hawthorne. And when we return, taylor Swift will perform her new single LIVE right after the break!!

AR- To start off, just to let you know, you don't need a new blog space for each assignment. Simply add a new post to your blogspot with each new assignment. Then they will all appear in one place. Let me know if you need me to show you how this is done.
ReplyDeleteYou make some fine points about character, and attempt to do so with theme (although adultery, sin, etc. are not really themes) -- but what about VOICE? You get close with mentioned of darkness -- TONE, perhaps.
Careful of "text" speak: "can u tell us" and "wrote abt it" and "i" -- argh!! This is English class, not texting class!
